This was almost too much fun to be legal.
Dropped watercolor onto wet paper...let dry..''found'' these Hibiscus with acrylic applied with a fine point bottle...let dry...added watercolor to the flowers and touched up the background. Lastly a little spattering with the white acrylic...fun, fun, fun!!

I had these lovely flowers in my gardens in California.

LUSH DAFFODILS APRIL 29, 2011

DAFFODIL LOVE

In spite of being covered with snow two weeks ago, and going through one inch hail three days ago, the sun is out today and the daffodils are all over the place, lush and lovely!

I have kept these near my windows, even though here, it gets pretty cold close to the windows when there is snow outside.
You can see that the one in back is reaching for the sun.....it has been a long winter for it!

I'm also a survivor who is reaching for the sun...always! (Except when it is over 75!)

ANTIQUE GERANIUMS

I pulled this out of the junk bin.
It was an experiment using crumpled plastic bags for background...and was too pale.
I kept looking at it and finally ''found'' geraniums. I painted them in and them glazed over the whole thing with Quinacridone Gold.
The Quin. gold gave it the antique look.

ABSTRACT ARIZONA

As I was painting this, Arizona came to mind.

I have a particular affection for that state.

It was the first place I lived after retirement, but I only was there one year, due to family situations and it was a bit too hot for me also, although where I lived was 4500 ft elevation and it was not quite as hot as other parts.

I lived in Sierra Vista, a very nice, clean and neat little city thirty minutes from Mexico, and one hour south of Tucson. I lived near Fort Huachuca, famous for the Buffalo Soldiers, and I belonged to the Fort Huachuca Art Association, a wonderful group of artists.

I did a lot of exploring of the state and found many beautiful areas, from Sedona, the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, and on and on.

My father was born there, and his father was a ''real'' cowboy there in the early 1900's, herding cattle on the open range.

There is a ''light'' in Arizona that I have experienced nowhere else. Sunrises and sunsets and that Arizona big sky are all magnificent!

This is just Watercolor on textured paper.

This represents the Joy of Painting, especially with Watercolor.

I wanted to try a new technique I had read about for backgrounds, and had NO IDEA what I would paint, or end up with.

The technique is as follows. Take a cheap plastic grocery bag and squeeze it into a ball making as many crinkles as possible.

Open it up carefully without stretching out the wrinkles, and cut a piece a little larger than your paper.(I would use at least 90 lb. paper, and 140 lb would be better for this.)

Wet your paper thoroughly, and while it shines, drop in as much color as you wish remembering it dries lighter.

Cover your paper with the scrunched plastic and carefully press it down all over but don't move it around. Let it dry overnight and you will have a delightful surprise when you peel it off the next day!

Then try to find your subject...or you may have one in mind.

I visualized these blooming artichokes and ''found'' them with Ink and then added Watercolor for definition.

So much fun....as painting should always be!!...:)

HOMEMADE FRENCH ONION SOUP

photo
HOMEMADE FRENCH ONION SOUP

I just made Julia Child's, FRENCH ONION SOUP, from her book ''Mastering The Art of French Cooking.''
I was inspired by the movie ''Julie & Julia'' which I just finally watched. Cute movie and Meryl Streep was wonderful as Julia.

I didn't use the Cognac or Brandy, but I did use Chardonnay.
I used Asiago in place of the Swiss cheese....
Oh yes, I always make my own herbed croutons, and I used them instead of slabs of bread as she calls them...:)
I took this photo just before browning in the oven...,:)

This soup takes awhile but it is well worth it....like I'm in Soup Heaven right now...:)and I love a great soup!

THIS IS A CRY FOR HELP!!!

I need help in identifying this and also would like the recipe.

When I was a girl this was one of my dads favorites and he would bring this home from the store often. I believe he bought it in a grocery store from a shelf near the bread and rolls.

It is made with a heavy pastry-like dough that is thin but not flaky. It was made and filled with finely chopped nuts, that were mixed with sugar and a lot of cinnamon. Possibly butter was also in the mix. No raisins.

Each loaf was about 4 X 5 inches and pre sliced. Each slice was probably a quarter of an inch thick.

It was a solid little loaf, nothing light and fluffy about it.

I have tried to capture it by memory here with watercolor and ink.

I hope some Flickr friend recognizes it and helps me out.. I have been searching for a long time.
