It is very difficult to get an extremely active, excited 5 year old to hold still long enough for a photo. I really may not have ever seen this expression on her face before...but at least she finally looked at the camera...:)

The natives were worried that we would not have snow for Christmas, and they may be right,...however we had a snowfall last night and I awoke to these views out my windows this morning,...Christmas Eve...2011. By noon now, the sun is out, and it is melting fast.
This is the way I prefer it...:)

We are having snow today...but it sticks awhile and melts. No ''real'' lasting snow yet this year.

LIA & SANTA 2011
Just down the block from me is the Cascade Township Museum...and a huge outdoor Christmas tree.
I have just come from the annual lighting of the tree and my son-in-law who is a fireman drove Santa in the firetruck to the lighting, and then we all went into the Museum for treats and the kids got to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas.
This is my granddaughter Lia who is almost 5 years old.

THE END OF AUTUMN
I feel sad at the end of Autumn...especially here in Michigan, after the brilliant display of bright colors on the trees, knowing that a lot of bare limbs will take their place...soon to be covered with snow until April!!....:)

TAMARACK LARCH TREE IN MY BACKYARD
Tamarack Larch, or Tamarack, or Hackmatack, or American Larch (Larix laricina) is a species of larch native to Canada, from eastern Yukon and Inuvik, Northwest Territories east to Newfoundland, and also south into the northeastern United States from Minnesota to Cranesville Swamp, West Virginia; there is also a disjunct population in central Alaska. The name Tamarack is the Algonquian name for the species and means "wood used for snowshoes".
It is a small to medium-size deciduous coniferous tree reaching 10–20 metres (33–66 ft) tall, with a trunk up to 60 centimetres (24 in) diameter. The bark is tight and flaky, pink, but under flaking bark it can appear reddish. The leaves are needle-like, 2–3 cm (0.8–1.2 in) short, light blue-green, turning bright yellow before they fall in the autumn, leaving the pale pinkish-brown shoots bare until the next spring. The needles are produced spirally on long shoots and in dense clusters on short woody spur shoots. The cones are the smallest of any larch, only 1–2.3 cm (0.4–0.9 in) long, with 12-25 seed scales; they are bright red, turning brown and opening to release the seeds when mature, 4–6 months after pollination.
Key characteristics:[3]
The needles are normally borne on a short shoot in groups of 10–20 needles.
The Larch is deciduous and the needles turn yellow in autumn.
The seed cones are small, less than 2 cm (0.8 in) long, with lustrous brown scales.
Larch are commonly found in swamps, bogs, and other low-land areas.

PEAR FUN
Today was PLAY day. I have a head cold and didn't feel like concentrating, so I did some fun things...drawing with black acrylic from a pointed bottle, spraying, spattering with a toothbrush and palette knife....not really caring how it turned out.
It brought me to a memory of when I was a young child and my mother made Christmas Cards using a stencil and spattering with a toothbrush. I remember to this day the awe I felt after she had spattered and then lifted the stencil and the card came to life.
I always wanted to do that and when I was in the 8th grade, I made our family Christmas cards using that technique....It has always fascinated me to see a painting come to life with spattering and spraying.
I did get a little carried away on this but it was just FUN!!!....:)

JAPANESE MAPLE
Watercolor & Ink Painting
I am a bit disappointed in this one.
I used an iridescent Daniel Smith color for shading and the camera picks it up blatantly!
In my painting you cannot see all that blue!!
I thought the painting was somewhat successful until I downloaded it to my HD.
Editing only made it worse, so I went back to the original, and so this is straight out of the camera.
I love Japanese Maple colors..and next time I wont use the iridescent.

''MY AUTUMN WOODS'' PAINTING
Our woods are so wonderfully colored around Michigan right now.
This is done with Mixed Media.
Watercolor, Acrylic, Neocolor Watersoluble Wax Pastels, Inks...including the Elegant Writer Pen.
PUMPKIN WHIMSY...HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
This was definitely a fun playtime experiment.
I used all sorts of art goodies to create this including the Elegant Writer Pen, Black Acrylic applied with a ''gutta'' bottle,, Watercolor & Watercolor Pencils, and White Pentel Gel pen.
I have been asked about using the Elegant Writer Pen in sketches & paintings, so I wrote up a little tutorial for anyone interested.
ELEGANT WRITER...made by...www.speedballart.com
I use mostly size 1.3mm Extra Fine
I bought mine at my local Hobby Lobby arts & crafts store, near the Calligraphy section.
They are available online at various art sources also.
The cost is around three dollars.
There are several ways to use these pens in sketching/painting.
I usually draw first in pencil, then very lightly go over the pencil line with the pen, skipping some of them, not to overdo the ink.
I then barely touch the edge of the ink line with a wet(with water) brush which results in an explosion of the ink line.
You can also thoroughly wet the ink for another effect.
Once the ink has been wet with water and dried it will not ''explode'' again.
Once it dries you can add more ink if needed...and repeat procedures.
You can add watercolor after the ink has dried.
You'll want to experiment and play with it before using it on a ''serious'' sketch or painting...:)

GINKGO BILOBA IN MY GARDEN...A LIVING FOSSIL...190 MILLION YEARS OLD...:)..SEE BELOW.
GINKGO BILOBA IN MY GARDEN...A LIVING FOSSIL...190 MILLION YEARS OLD...:)..SEE BELOW., a photo by Louise001 on Flickr.
Just beginning to ''get its color on''...:) It will be totally brilliant yellow in a few weeks.
Currently, Ginkgo biloba is the only known existing species of Ginkgoaceae. The term living fossil is often used to describe Ginkgo biloba since it appears the same today as it did in the past, as seen in the fossil record. This species dates back to about 190 million years ago, but the order to which it belongs, Ginkgoales, can be traced back earlier, to the Permian period. In the mountains of China, the species survived in Buddhist monasteries and were introduced throughout Asia around 1100 AD. It did not reach Europe or America until the 1700s. During the Cretaceous, at least five or six other Ginkgo species existed. Our knowledge of these now-extinct species is based mainly on leaf remains, since the stems and fruits rarely survive the fossilization process (Tidwell's Common Fossil Plants of Western North America (1975)). Leaf shape also helps to distinguish different species from one another. For example, the leaf of Ginkgo dissecta has a deeply dissected blade, as the species name implies, creating several lobes.
Ginkgo biloba is a dioecious tree species native only to China, though it is cultivated around the world and has been used for many medicinal treatments. Listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, the only surviving wild population is reportedly found on Tianmu Mountain, in the Zhejiang province of China.

OUT MY WINDOW .. AUTUMN TODAY
This is a quickie sketch in Watercolor & Ink of the view out my window...minus a couple of telephone poles and wires.
The colors are outstandingly intense this year and they are just getting started!
I am amazed at the variety of greens too, even though the fall colors are coming on.
The weather has been just wonderful...in the low 70's days and cool and crisp at night...I like it like this...:)

GARLIC FUN
WATERCOLOR & INK PAINTING
Dating back over 6,000 years, garlic is native to central Asia,[3] and has long been a staple in the Mediterranean region, as well as a frequent seasoning in Asia, Africa, and Europe. It was known to Ancient Egyptians, and has been used throughout its history for both culinary and medicinal purposes.

CALLA LILY PLAY
After the details of the Iris painting yesterday, I felt the need to be more playful and fast and lose....I pulled this one out of my junk bin, and literally went wild with it....:)
By the way...I am still NOT using any green from the tubes....all greens in all my work are from mixing various yellows and blues.

GEESE IN MY FIELD..RAINY, OVERCAST DAY
GEESE IN MY FIELD..RAINY, OVERCAST DAY
There are many geese that winter over all around this area. This is a small flock, as usually there are at least a dozen.
I live a block from the Thornapple River and geese have been flying over and honking daily, but today six of them decided to land in my freshly mown field.
I was afraid to get closer since they might fly away...however right after taking the picture, all six of them flew by my window, honking 'goodbye'...as I was loading this photo...:)

RED MEANS STOP!!!!
Of the many thousands of mushroom species in the world, only 32 have been associated with fatalities, and an additional 52 have been identified as containing significant toxins.[6] By far the majority of mushroom poisonings are not fatal,[7] but the majority of fatal poisonings are attributable to the Amanita phalloides mushroom
DO NOT EAT!!!!
