TEASELS....PEN & INK In my moleskin Journal.
Dipsacus is a genus of flowering plant in the family Dipsacaceae. The members of this genus are known as teasel or teazel or teazle. The genus includes about 15 species of tall herbaceous biennial plants (rarely short-lived perennial plants) growing to 1-2.5 m tall, native to Europe, Asia and northern Africa.
I have loved the sight of these along the roadsides all my life and often it is all I can do to keep myself from stopping the car and getting out and picking some to take home...and sometimes I could not stop myself!!!

In the book Ferdnand(yes that is correct spelling)....raised them in cages and fed garden leftovers to them.

QUEEN ANNE'S LACE.

IS IT QUEEN ANNE'S LACE OR POISONOUS HEMLOCK?
Daucus carota (common names include wild carrot, (UK) bird's nest, bishop's lace, and (US) Queen Anne's lace) is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae, native to temperate regions of Europe, southwest Asia and naturalised to northeast North America and Australia; domesticated carrots are cultivars of a subspecies, Daucus carota subsp. sativus.
Daucus carota is a variable biennial plant, usually growing up to 1 m tall and flowering from June to August. The umbels are claret-coloured or pale pink before they open, then bright white and rounded when in full flower, measuring 3–7 cm wide with a festoon of bracts beneath; finally, as they turn to seed, they contract and become concave like a bird's nest. The dried umbels detach from the plant, becoming tumbleweeds.[1]
Very similar in appearance to the deadly Poison Hemlock, Daucus carota is distinguished by a mix of bi-pinnate and tri-pinnate leaves, fine hairs on its stems and leaves, a root that smells like carrots, and occasionally a single dark red flower in its center.

First of all I resurrected it from my trash bin while I was waiting for Margarita salt to dry on another piece...I never got back to the ''salt painting'' because this one was so much fun...:)

This is a 10 minute sketch done with one pencil and one brush and water.
It is a ''General's'' Graphite ''Sketch & Wash'' pencil.
Simply sketch and use a wet brush for shading.
The pencil is very inexpensive...:)

IRIS GREETINGS
This is a card for my sister-in-law Susan who is recovering from surgery. I wanted to do one that is cheerful, sweet and feminine like her.
I loosely copied the catalog cover from Schreiner's Iris Gardens in Oregon...a gorgeous place to visit about now I think.
This is similar to their newly released Iris that they developed for 2010...a bit pricey as yet until they grow more...only $75.00 per seedling/rhizome.
The name of it is ''TWILIGHT RAPTURE''...:)
This little card does not do justice to the beauty of this new Iris.

IDA RED APPLES

I started this for the 20 Minute Sketch group...however after 3 interrupting phone calls, I gave up...I think it took more like 40 minutes anyway...:)
P.S....The phone hadn't rung all morning...until I started the sketch...:)
Michigan grows wonderful apples...many varieties are grown here. I like these Ida Reds, but my favorite is still a good crisp sweet Fuji!...:)

FUN BLOOMS
A BUNCH OF FUN
Here are the steps...
1. Wet paper
2. Throw/spatter in some paint, one color at a time, and spray with misty sprayer.
3. Tip paper and blow on it to get it to send out shapes
4. Drag a fingernail, or reverse end of brush, or stick through wet areas.
5. Let dry
6. Add more color as needed, using spray and brush to help make shapes.
7. Look for forming shapes to help them along.
8. Let dry
9. Find the shapes with pen and ink....you might need to turn the paper even.
10. Add more colors/shading as needed.

* Great Basin Desert (A. pleicantha)
Habitat
Sandy or gravelly desert roadsides and washes below 8,000 feet.
Flowers
White, papery flowers with a bright, single eye of yellow stamens bloom year round. Flowers grow to 3 inches wide and have 6 broad, delicate, wrinkled petals.
Description
Prickly Poppy is the name used for various species of the Argemone Genus, all virtually indistiguishable from each other. Members of the Poppy Family are characterized by flowers with numerous stamens and 4 to 6 petals.
This very branchy, pale green plant grows to 4 feet high and is covered with yellow pricklies. Long, very lobed, spiny leaves resembling thistles grow to 8 inches. All parts of this plant contain alkaloids that are poisonous. It is common throughout the West because not even cattle eat it.

Surf thistle often occurs in the same areas as beach spectacle-pod on the former Guadalupe Oil Field. Approximately 5,000 plants were observed in the 2000 survey.

Surf thistle is a bushy, short-lived perennial plant that grows to a height of 1.5-2.5 feet. This member of the sunflower family is characterized by large rosettes of spiny, white-woolly, deeply lobed and undulating leaves, with whitish flowers that occur in dense heads.
Habitat:
Surf thistle grows in coastal foredunes, often on the slopes of transverse dunes at elevations between 10 and 200 feet. Surf thistle does not occur on beaches or further back in the stabilized dunes

IRIS IN MARCH
I believe the Iris comes in more blue shades than any other flower.
Especially the German Bearded like this one.

CAUGHT IN A STORM
WATERCOLOR..INK..&..DR PH MARTIN'S BLEED PROOF WHITE.
THIS WAS AN EXPERIMENT WITH THE BLEED PROOF WHITE....
The main snow on the tree was created by leaving the paper white.
The falling snow and some of the drifts on the ground was created with the bleed proof white, USED WITH A FAN BRUSH....It seems to work pretty well...:)..AS FAR AS COVERING WATERCOLOR.

Golden daffodils
Announcing the beginnings
Long awaited Spring.

The Daffodils
I WANDER'D lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils,
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretch'd in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

REMEMBERING MY AMARYLLIS
The year before I moved here, these were growing in large clumps OUTSIDE in my yard in North San Diego County in California. There were many clumps and one clump had 21 stalks blooming.....:)

I am so longing for the snow and cold to be gone....I went out in the yard and stared at the snow for awhile yesterday , hoping to see flowers popping up but alas, none appeared, so I had to ''dream some up''...:)

Still wanting flowers around me...tired of snow.
I decided to get wild and have fun and used a bigger brush than ever.
I left all the watercolor surprises like blooms and hard edges.
Did not predraw....and from imagination.
