ARTICHOKES GOING TO SEED
ARTICHOKES GOING TO SEED
I used to love to see the Artichoke fields in Castroville, California when the farmers left a section of a field to go to seed. They would sometimes look like this to me before the brilliant purple tops came out like all thistles do...which artichokes are.
I am always inspired by Karlyn Holman's books and I got the idea for this from her Watercolor Without Boundaries Book.
I used the Elegant Writer Pen, and Caran D' Ache Neocolor Wax pastels.
The snow finally stopped after 18 or 20 hours ...and I was housebound having the choice of which to do, house cleaning or art...guess what won?....:) :)
TODAY'S 15 HOUR SNOW STORM..DRIVEWAY..2/24/12
We have had 15 hours of steady, thick, wet, lake effect snow.
These three photos were taken out three different windows.
It is white everywhere...and the snow is thick so the photos are kinda unclear.

AMARYLLIS GLOW
AMARYLLIS GLOW
Painted with Watercolor & Ink
I think I used 5 reds in the glaze on these flowers...:)
Everyone should have the experience of watching one of these bare brown bulbs in a pot begin to grow. They are rather amazing in the speed with which they grow and bloom. It seems like an inch or two a day...and then suddenly you have a large plant with brilliant blooms.
My family tells me the story of me as a little girl age 3-4 when my dad bought one of these as a gift for my mom. Every day I listened to them discuss this fantastic plant and the speed with which it was growing......and finally it opened...a huge flower....and what did I do as a little girl...??? I picked it of course and present the flower and stalk to my mother!!...:)

MUSHROOM WHIMSY
Lepista nuda (Bull.) Cooke 1871
Também conhecido por / Also known as
Tricholoma nudum or Clitocybe nuda
Pé-violeta / wood blewit or blue stalk mushroom
The first time I saw Luis's photo of these beauty's I knew I must paint them.
Thank you Luis for permission. You can see Luis's wonderful photo stream here.http://www.flickr.com/photos/luisgaifem/6720307549/in/faves-27259 847@N00/
After I began the painting, I realized a more whimsical sketch was in order.
I loved the pink/blue and grey glow, but especially the composition.
Of course I never copy anything exactly, so I used artistic license as usual.
I felt the use of Daniel Smith's Iridescent Watercolors would work here too.
This is done with them and Ink...:)
